America Requires Morality

Is morality needed in America today? Absolutely! If America is to be a nation of honor, that does what is good, then America must be grounded by what is absolutely right and true. There must be something that binds Americans together in a way that transcends time and circumstance. There must be answers to the most basic questions facing America and Americans. “What is right?” “What is wrong?” America needs morality.
I find that most folks don’t
like talking about morality and morals. I am even willing to bet readers of
this post will start eye-rolling because I use the words “morality,” “absolute,”
“right” and “true.” If this is you, then you are missing the point of this
post. I am talking about our nation’s moral values, the American morality. Getting
directly to the point, this post is about attempting to answer this question. Does
America need a set of moral values?
Morals – America needs them!
America needs morality. Without
morality, America will cease to exist as it was intended, a unified nation of
free people. Therefore, morality serves as the foundation of our national
existence and protector of our national essence. It’s as true today as it was
in the past.
“We have no government
armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by
morality and religion. Our Constitution was made only for a religious and moral
people. It is wholly inadequate for the government of any other.” – John Adams,
2nd US President
“Stand with anybody
that stands right. Stand with him while he is right and part with him when he
goes wrong.” – Abraham Lincoln, 16th US President
“To educate a man in
mind and not in morals is to educate a menace to society.” Theodore Roosevelt,
26th US President
“When there is a lack
of honor in government, then morals of the whole people are poisoned.” –
Herbert Hoover, 31st US President
“We have always known
that heedless self-interest was bad morals.” Franklin D. Roosevelt, 32nd
US President
“One has a moral
responsibility to disobey unjust laws.” – Martin Luther King Jr.
“There are no easy
answers, but there are simple answers. We must have the courage to do what we
know is morally right.” – Ronald Reagan, 40th US President
The bottom line is this; the
United States of America is a constitutional representative republic that
exists according to the consent of “We the People.” Therefore, it is “We the
People” who are ultimately responsible for the goodness and longevity of
America. Let me say that again; individual Americans (not politicians, not
governments, not celebrities, not bureaucrats, not lobbyists, not corporations)
are responsible for the goodness and longevity of America. Therefore, Americans
need a unifying, transcendent, and well understood morality.
Going Forward
If “We the People” are to
preserve and promote the American republic, then America must be a moral
nation. If America is to be a moral nation, then Americans must be a moral
people. America and Americans must by steadfastly focused on doing what is good
in the light of absolute truth over laws and intentions.
It’s time to talk about morality
in the open, and walk-the-walk in all aspects of our daily lives. It’s time to discuss
it at home, at work, and in town hall meetings. It’s time to express it over
the radio, demonstrate it in our movies, and uphold it with family television
programming. It’s time to teach it in schools, universities, and churches.
It’s time to turn away from
relative confidence and turn towards moral certainty.
